I visited a wealthy home last week, in my ministerial role. There was a cabinet full of fascinating books. A book on "the struggle" especially caught my eye: The Unlikely Secret Agent. I sneaked open the cabinet -- but I dropped the catch, and it swung shut with a bang and the rattle of loose glass. My wealthy host quickly turned his head and gave me the eye. His wife kindly said: "He's read that book. You can borrow it." OBSERVATION: It has been a fascinating book, and reminded me indeed of the struggle. I knew some of the people involved at the time. I was chair of the Conscription Advice Service, having put my signature to my title in the home of Glenn Goosen and Therese Boulle (Glenn questioned former president FW de Klerk at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission). It is special to have had an inside view, and the book brings it back. It's a small world, because the cousin of FW de Klerk preceded me in my ministry in the Karoo.
