Cat In The Pot

The Afrikaans language is full of wonderful expressions. I heard another for the first time today: "Hulle sit die kat in die pot." They've put the cat in the pot. Meaning, they are broke. I recently shared, too: "Hulle sit die pot mis." They've put the pot in the wrong place. OBSERVATION: And there are so many words which carry a special insight into human nature: skaamkwaad (anger caused by shame), dronkverdriet (grief caused through drunkenness, or vice versa), loskop (someone in a continual muddle), tameletjie (a problem like a sticky sweet), wegsing (to sing someone into silence), and a great many more ...
