Two days ago, I received a call. A dear old man in my Karoo parish had died. This morning, during the Sunday morning service, I received another call -- I returned it later. His dear wife had died. She had seemingly been fine. It seems all the more tragic when both go together like this. I have encountered this before in ministry, but not as striking as this. OBSERVATION: Last year, a survey in the USA, of more than 370 000 deaths, showed that when a marriage partner dies, there is "a substantial risk of death" to the other. It is called "the widowhood effect", or dying of a broken heart. I shall be conducting the funeral of both of them, together, later in the week.
