Born To Emergency

Son M. celebrated his 30th birthday on Tuesday. He was born early on the morning of 14 June 1986. I drove home on a deserted Cape Road in Port Elizabeth, with troop carriers stationed all along the road. They declared a national State of Emergency the day he was born. We have made a lot of jokes about that. No less than the UN Security Council responded to the day of his birth. OBSERVATION: Yet I seem to see more troop carriers now than I did back then. Now they carry police rather than soldiers. I see them stationed in the townships, on national roads, in the city centre, standing tall above the traffic and pedestrians. The HeraldLIVE gives some idea of an "ominous" situation.
