Through The Skylight

There would seem, to me, to be just two kinds of gospel. There is the one which considers that nothing comes through the skylight, so to speak -- to borrow words of the late Bishop Lesslie Newbigin. God does not break in from above. Then there is the gospel that, indeed, believes that God intervenes in such a way as to defy our human "mathematical" thinking. My late wife Mirjam requested that the theme of her memorial service should be: "And I saw heaven opened" (Revelation 19:11). Some thought that this spoke of her heavenly hope. However for her, it was about a God who intervenes in our lives. When there seems to be no other way, heaven opens. When you meet God, and walk with God, you continually experience, and reckon with, things that are outside the range of ordinary human experience. OBSERVATION: These two kinds of gospel, I think, more than anything else, define the kind of Church one has.
