Counselling 101

A post on counselling has been unusually popular. One of the tricks of counselees which I mention there is "changing the subject". For this and other reasons, a basic skill of counselling is to survey the whole of the conversation as it progresses, rather than being swept along with it. An untrained person may easily be swept along. One needs to have a clear eye for where the conversation came from, how it has shifted, and why. OBSERVATION: Yet one doesn't develop this skill to catch people out. If people are determined to deflect the conversation, I just let it be. I seek progress first in other areas.
