A student asked me recently for advice with a Master's degree thesis. I said, this will need major surgery, do you want that? She thereupon wrote me something which one would never hear in my own culture. She would be happy for my help, she wrote, but "I know that death ('the dead') is near, and I don't want to burden you." Either that's a prohecy, or it is a common perception of death among non-European cultures -- which my wife also has, and which the Bible apparently has, too (although we tend to miss it).
