I once joined a young woman on her first visit to a psychiatric hospital, to see her father. When we got there, she wouldn’t enter the building. She said: "I can’t handle this! I can’t do it!" And so I saw the old man alone. OBSERVATION: Where there is serious physical or mental illness -- in fact any kind of trauma -- family and friends may flee away. They won’t go near. It is something I often come across in ministry, yet those who are not familiar with the phenomenon may be greatly distressed by it. The relationship between father and daughter, in this case, was sound, and he wasn't in too bad a way.
