In 2003, I visited the Maiana Stone (pictured). Set on a concrete base outside a maneaba or meeting house, it is a volcanic rock of considerable weight. The mystery is that it is volcanic. There are no volcanic rocks within (I think) a thousand miles of Maiana. As I remember, according to oral tradition, the stone is said to have been carried by the first
migrants to Maiana, thousands of years ago, on a baurua or giant
canoe. You may click on the photo to enlarge. OBSERVATION: The Maiana Stone is famous in the Central Pacific, yet I find no reference to it on the Internet.
