I took the photo earlier in the day of the African Madonna in St. George's Cathedral, Cape Town. It was carved from dense lignum vitae wood by Leon Underwood, in 1935. According to Pallant House Gallery in England, it reinterprets an archetypal subject from Western art in a form inspired by indigenous Bantu carvings. You may click on the photo to enlarge. OBSERVATION: It is not an easy subject to photograph, but this one seemed fair -- the statue in silhouette, with some features accentuated by the candles.
