It is the custom of many local Churches to take up the collection multiple times. I first encountered it in a Church in Zwelitsha, now in the Eastern Cape. I had just been appointed Consulent Minister there. I put all the money in my wallet in the first collection (the collection plate was passed to the Consulent Minister, too) -- then they took up the collection another twelve times! I felt a little embarrassed, since I had nothing left to give. OBSERVATION: The next time I was prepared. So next time you visit a local Church you don't know, take a wad of, say, twenty R10 notes with you. I do not know where the custom originates or what it means.
