Airports

This post is about airports (the BBC today showed a hair-raising Landing on St. Helena -- which reminded me of my own). Here, in my own experience, are the most memorable airports:
• Phnom Penh International Airport, during the war. The landing in a jet aircraft was vicious. Not long after, a passenger jet's undercarriage disintegrated on landing.
• Beru airport. The takeoff in an STOL aircraft was hair-raising. It barely got its wheels in the air and one was over the ocean.
• Malhaha Airport (pictured here at the top of Rotuma island). Takeoff was memorable, in a twin-prop aircraft swaying from side to side between coconut palms.
• Bonriki International Airport. This airport on Tarawa deserves a mention for having been almost as bad as Phnom Penh International airport.
• Ministro Pistarini International Airport deserves a mention for a different reason. Landing at night, I never knew a city could be so big.
