I took this photo earlier on Christmas Day, of a grandmother and granddaughter from Upington, near the Namibian border. She is married by African custom to a retired Swiss banker. OBSERVATION: In South Africa, marriages performed under African customary law, including polygynous marriages, are recognised as legal marriages. The bride-price, lobola, is recognised as marriage, too. Bad luck if you get cold feet, because the mere agreement to pay lobola qualifies as marriage under South African law. I myself negotiated lobola with my wife's family, but we understood the Church wedding to be the day of our marriage.
