Recently I blogged about my arranged marriage with wife E -- an arrangement which turned into love. A normal post for me, I shouldn't have been surprised by the interest. Because the marriage was arranged, then, there were surprises. While E was a deaconess at the time, all I knew about her was that she was faithful, devout, and a very good organiser. Here were some of the surprises:
• I thought she was Cape Coloured. She was not. She was mostly of Xhosa origin.
• I discovered she was very bright. I didn't anticipate it, with her demure exterior.
• I discovered that she was boisterous, although that took a while to be revealed.
• I learnt that she was close to nature, and had an intimate knowledge of the bundu.
• And I didn't know that she had a huge, friendly clan. I had imagined a nuclear family.
