Near the end of a ten-year ministry -- my first major ministry -- I told my Church I had received a call. They said, we want to keep you -- and offered me a substantially better package. I told the Church which was calling me, this is what they'll do to keep me. They said, we'll match that. I accepted the call. It wasn't about money, though. For one thing, both Churches were offering me the same. OBSERVATION: It was very generous of both of them -- yet one sees, at the same time, something one often sees in ministry. The old Church delayed what they really should have done sooner, while the new Church in fact never did match it. All in all, though, I think it was good to "play open cards".
