A couple asked for their child to be baptised in Church. They were unmarried, the mother was a teen, they were not involved in the Church, and the relationship was decidedly unstable. In my Churches, we have said that one needs to demonstrate that there is a foundation on which one takes the baptismal vow. But there was something that swung the decision, which we felt was important. The grandparents stepped forward, and said that they would take the vow, too. They had a strong spiritual foundation. OBSERVATION: The vow is this: "We promise to bring up this child as a Christian child, in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." The grandparents, in fact, brought a lot of goodness and stability to that situation.
