A woman under my ministry worked for years on her own answers to life, which she recorded diligently in notebooks. She was very serious about it, and it was an admirable undertaking. But then she came up against some major challenges: her husband fell gravely ill, and she herself had a close call with death. She started sinking deeper and deeper into depression -- and the more she sank into depression, the more she tried to find the answers in her notebooks. I visited her towards the end, and found her paging frantically through her notebooks. I suggested that she might try the Bible -- but she was too convinced of her notebooks. Finally she was admitted to a psychiatric institution.
