I last did a serious electronic design (maybe) ten years ago. It may not be of much interest to some, but it enthuses me: recently I put my hand to a two-channel magnetometer, with twelve stages of amplification. I was too afraid to switch it on -- then when I did, five stages of amplification (in one integrated circuit) blew out -- yesterday. However, I now have two working channels. Each will easily pick up an "unmagnetised" pin -- and of course, the earth's magnetic field. The next step is to mix the two channels. OBSERVATION: What the magnetometer will ultimately do, and how it will perform, is a mystery to me.
