People often pray in trouble. Yet what they pray may make all the difference. Here the so-called prayer wheel (pictured) is helpful. A man said to me: “I’m praying so hard.” I said: “What are you praying?” He said: “I’m praying that God will help me” (which is petition). Yet when I asked him about dedication, intercession, and so on, he didn't do any of it. Another example: A woman said to me: “I pray every day for God to forgive me” (also petition of sorts). However, she was convinced that God was punishing her. When I asked her about thanksgiving, adoration, and so on, she didn't do it. The illustration on the right is from John Mallison (whom I met once), and depicts a balanced prayer life. You may click on it to enlarge.
