I had a short article published this morning by Philosophical Investigations, on the past and future of ubuntu: Ubuntu's Fifth Wave. The meaning of ubuntu is encapsulated in the idiom "Ubuntu ngumtu ngabanye abantu" -- a person is a person through other people. It is roughly the opposite of European Enlightenment thinking: "The individual is prior to the group." Ubuntu has passed through several "waves" -- among them village ubuntu and political ubuntu -- now I take a very brief look at its present and future.
