Once in a while, a situation has arisen in counselling -- that is, infrequently -- where a counselee has disagreed with me as counsellor (my counselling is directive, or there would be no disagreement). In such a case, there are two possible ways forward. First, double-check: "What have I not understood?" But second, training and experience may tell me that I am right. I have a quiet confidence in the "fight" that tells me to stay with my conviction. OBSERVATION: However, I do not see it as my task to persuade people to see my point of view, or to take the counselee where they refuse to go. That is the work of the Holy Spirit. So it should be, too, in informal counselling among friends.
