I read in the Wall Street Journal this morning: "Synagogues across US step up security." This following the tragic shooting in Pittsburgh. Here in Cape Town, security has been high around synagogues for many years. Some years ago, I spoke with a local synagogue security chief -- of Marais Road Shul -- after our Church had been hit by (apparently) two shotgun blasts. He said: "Reverend, the threat is not in our imagination. It is real." The Marais Road Shul -- and others -- have armed protection.
