I have been digitising a few old slides, as I have opportunity. This is my sister and I sitting on a pandanus tree on Beru atoll -- 6.9 square miles in extent, and 1°20' south of the equator. The colourful fruit of the pandanus tree was my favourite food at the time. We wore no shirts or shoes, and with hardened feet we could walk over jagged coral without difficulty. We were the only two children of European origin in that part of the world. OBSERVATION: How the world has changed since then. One now travels to the islands by air, and there are frequent supplies and good communications.
