Afrikaners today, though influential, are a small minority in South Africa -- and by no means a homogeneous group. Yesterday wife E and I entered a village restaurant populated only by Afrikaners. Suddenly all eyes were on us, and there were no smiles. The whole restaurant seemed to stop. It seems hard to say what the reason was -- perhaps as simple as an unfamiliar sight, namely Black and White together. In the city, no one seems to pay any attention to us at all.
