Over the years, a few people asked me, as the electronics designer, how one could protect a herd of animals on a very large plot of ground. I discussed it years ago with another electronics designer. He said, monitor their footfalls through vibrations in the earth. This didn't seem possible. But now the BBC reports that it looks promising: Vibrations Offer New Way to Track Elephants. My own idea was a circuit breaker on a perimeter fence, to detect intruders. But it would need to be a custom designed circuit breaker. OBSERVATION: A circuit breaker is what causes switches on a distribution board to trip. This idea would almost certainly have prevented the shooting of Naka Drotské in South Africa three days ago (he survived). One wire in a fence -- looking like every other wire, but insulated at the fence posts -- would trigger it. One can protect a herd through other means, but this idea is (maybe) new.
