A friend of mine, a political figure, decided to leave Cape Town this month for a new career. On the eve of his departure, a young woman accused him of rape. Political opponents took up the case and publicised it -- and said that he was planning to flee the city. He cancelled his travels, expecting that the police would charge him with the crime -- and he was terrified. Then it emerged that the young woman did not exist. There was no such name, no such person. He moved -- and made public the names of his accusers.
