‘Free’ Rectory

It is not unusual for a minister to be provided with a "free" rectory or  manse. However, "free" is misleading, for two reasons. Firstly, the minister pays a large tax for the privilege. Secondly, "free" generally means that there is no provision for his or her retirement housing. OBSERVATION: It sounds good to the ear: the minister is getting it free. In fact the minister is funding it with nothing in return -- although he or she may (may) not have to fund certain extras, such as rates, repairs, or upkeep. But this is the old model. During the past one or two generations, there had been a shift away from it.
