My computer lately was having frequent moments of introversion, where it lost all interest in the outside world (me). It went into intensive disk activity, and froze me out. I had a difficult time tracking down the problem. I checked indexing, processes, transfers ... it appeared to be memory swapping to disk. I turned that (mostly) off. I tried, too, to shift my (Linux) operating system down from 64-bit to 32-bit -- which worked marvellously -- but 32-bit is now being phased out. Anyway, I set swappiness = 0. That was the key.
