Maiana Atoll

This photo has been popular on Facebook. I am paying a visit here to Maiana atoll, half a degree from the equator in the Pacific. I led a seminar here, before taking a boat to Tarawa. A mystery in this photo is the giant log I am sitting on. There are no such trees within thousands of miles. And Maiana is famed for the Maiana Stone, a volcanic rock which the first settlers brought with them on a giant canoe. The nearest volcanic rock is also thousands of miles away.
