Saved By The Dyke

I mentioned that Kiribati was facing a King Tide this morning. I was following one village in particular, where a friend lives. Their previous experience was "harrowing". This time, they undertook a "gigantic" project to build a dyke around the village. A day before the King Tide, the dyke was swamped -- they had not had a level to see that everything was horizontal. But when the King Tide came, the dyke held the water back -- only because of favourable weather (see the photo). A villager wrote: "THANK YOU LORD FOR CALMING THE WINDS AND THE WAVES. GLORY AND PRAISES BE TO GOD ONLY." My friend said they were "lucked out".

POSTSCRIPT: It didn't end quite this well. During the following high tides, water seeped up through the sand -- so while the dyke worked, it didn't stop flooding entirely.
