Banaba (Ocean Island)

I remember this day. My father and I are on Ocean Island (Banaba) next to a tower of petrified guano. Today, Banaba has about 300 residents. 90% of the island's surface was stripped away, through phosphate mining. OBSERVATION: I was placed in quarantine when we arrived. I remember the day they opened the door and let me out. There was a footpath in front of me, under tall coconut palms, and flowers were a blaze of colour. The island dropped off steeply to the ocean below.
