Environmental Ethics

I received an e-mail from a well-known environmentalist today. Or rather, he is a professor of philosophy who is well-known for his environmental ethics. He responded to my own environmental ethics, summarising his position: "Humans are the stewards of creation." This contradicts my own position: "Nature must be left to nature." This is so in principle, because nature is an open system, therefore uncontrollable. The professor calls my position "provocative". OBSERVATION: Could one reconcile my position with Scripture? I think so. In Genesis 1, God says (abridged): "I have given you every plant ... and I have given everything every plant." Who then do plants belong to? Both, and all, and let not one tread on the other's.
