Many who live in more affluent areas in South Africa do not appreciate the degree of ... call it stripping that is going on in the country (in Afrikaans, it is called "stroop"). I photographed this in Thembalethu township -- population about 50 000. It is the stripping of bricks from a main thoroughfare, which turns up to the right of the photo. The water comes from leaking pipes. OBSERVATION: If it can be stripped, it will be stripped: a road, a pavement, a wall, a fence, a door, a latch, a light bulb, a tap. This happens even under 24-hour guard or surveillance. In the photo, one sees council workers -- maybe a sign of better things to come.
