The subject of hope is vital to the Church. The ancient Greek philosophers -- some of them -- said that all hope is false hope -- a grasping at straws, wishful thinking, and so on. I agree with that -- with the exception of Christian hope. I think the New Theological Dictionary sums it up brilliantly: "To hope means to look forward expectantly to God's future activity." OBSERVATION: Churches need hope in order to function -- things unravel without it -- but all too often they have the Greek kind of hope.
