As a minister, I showed my Bible study group my latest electronic prototypes when I had them -- and encouraged group members to share things, too. At home one day, I experimented with the latest LEDs. I was surprised that one could illuminate a wall at a great diistance. This meant that one could communicate very cheaply (and securely) on a light beam. The first time I tested a prototype in my yard, I had trouble with feedback at about ten metres. That meant that this would work very well. Part of the fun was digitising the voice transmission (a digital transmission increases the range). I showed it to my Bible study group, left the group and closed the door, and shone a beam through the glass from outside to speak to them inside. It was published as the Photic Phone. OBSERVATION: The design should still be available from Wimborne Publishing (October 2005). This advertises 15+ metres' range, but I tested it at a far greater distance than that.
