My neighbour was arrested last night -- a neighbour I see every day. The last thing he said, as he was taken away, was "Take my iPhone and keys." His phone lit up, and kept lighting up, and I suddenly found myself the nerve centre of a situation. His last move turned out to be a good one. I was able to inform his family -- and when they couldn't find any contact with police, I was able to connect them with the chief. OBSERVATION: If one should ever find oneself in such a situation, it is always good to double-check that all the basics of the case are sound. And sometimes, counter-intuitively, it may be wise, not to try to get out of the situation, but deeper in. It encourages mistakes and shame on the other side -- called unforced errors in tennis. That's my insider tip for the day.
POSTSCRIPT: The police had plainly failed to follow Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). "Double-checking the basics" immediately turned that up.
