My father before me was a minister. Many years ago, I said to him that my birthday had held up my ministerial work (birthdays in ministry can mean being tied up a whole day). He said no, birthdays are not "downtime", nor are other special occasions in the Church. Quite the opposite. They belong to ministry as a special way of communing with the congregation. Such days, he said, should be happily written off as useful downtime, and real ministry.
