Sadly, the Chairman of my Karoo Church passed away today. Tony Ford. His grandfather was E.B. Ford, the Bishop of Basutoland, and Chancellor of Grey's College. Tony had a heart of gold. I loved working with him, always. The way it worked, he had the power in the Church (the Church is run by the Board). OBSERVATION: The Church was (and is) a very different system to that which I was used to, and I wondered how this would work out. Especially, the Board had the power (rather than the congregation directly), and the Church was broad (rather than a believers' Church). This meant some real challenges, but I think they were all overcome. At more than seven years now, this has turned out to be one of my longer terms of office. But now we have lost the kingpin.
POSTSCRIPT: I have said that one's character is known by those who pay tribute to one. Apart from many townsfolk turning out to bring condolences, farm labourers walked from the farms.
