Sometimes it is worth calling a spade a spade. One of the best strategic moves I made in ministry happened during a stand-off with a government body. They were threatening to attach Church property if we did not comply with certain regulations, which contradicted the tenets of the Church -- and so on. A religious war was looming. It was all caused by -- as best I know -- one disgruntled Church member. Next to all the formal exchanges, I wrote them a private note along these lines: "This situation is the result of a stupid vendetta. There is just one person behind it, as best I know. You are allowing yourselves to be swept along with it. Do you really want a religious war for that?" They immediately dropped the case.
