I had an awful scrap with a Black Stellenbosch professor this week, on the issue of race. I shall not seek to decide it here, not now. But here is something interesting. She has a White husband; I have a Black wife. Two-thirds of her discussion partners are White (from what I have seen); two-thirds of mine are Black (in general, depending on the day). One cannot of course decide the merits or demerits of rational debate by such benchmarks. It does however suggest that life is stranger than we think. OBSERVATION: On the day my late wife Mirjam died, she said to me, "Remember, nuance." She knew that I needed it. Things are not simple. There are many sides to them.
POSTSCRIPT: I asked a Black friend for comment on the 'scrap'. The reply: You were attacked by Whites. Life may be stranger still.
