Poverty and Disadvantage

My parents lived through World War II, where "everything" was smashed up. They were married in a Church without a roof, and by the time of my birth, my father owned only a Vespa scooter -- to give an idea. Yet I constantly heard a story which made me proud of my culture and wealth and privilege -- even though there wasn't much to show. Today parents will be married in a Church without a roof, and a father will own only a Vespa scooter -- yet the story that his children hear is one of uprooting and poverty and disadvantage. I really wonder how that influences today's generation, compared with my generation. Will it serve them better?
