Positional Unity
A concept which has been of great importance to me in ministry is "positional unity". Unity is not about uniformity, unanimity, organisational unity, and so on, but about one's position before God through saving faith. In practice, this has meant diverse congregations, diverse associations, and growth in numbers, while at the same time retaining a hard core of belief. A few times, I have preached on the book of Philippians, the "letter of joy". At the beginning of Chapter 2, Paul lists four reasons for Christian unity. Three are about God’s relationship to us, while only one is about our relationship to each other. OBSERVATION: I wonder whether the great battles of Church history would have happened if "positional unity" had been at the forefront. I don't think so.
