Human Nature
At the moment, I am reading an expansive history of the Church. The clergy did some rather (worse than) doubtful things. For instance, a Byzantine emperor induced an archbishop to feed one of his adversaries poisoned bread at Holy Communion. Unfortunately, based on present experience, it would seem quite possible that it could still happen today -- if it were not for the fact that, in our day, the clergy are restrained from any extremes. OBSERVATION: This is not to say that the clergy are generally in a poor condition today. Those whom I know are (mostly) sincere and sacrificial. But the theology student may be aware that Church history teaches us things about human nature which are still relevant today.
