The Great Schism

I read last night about the Great Schism of 1054, between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches -- which continues to this day. It was a chaotic carry-on that should never have happened. But why did it? One sees many mistakes that happened all at once, but the greatest of them all, I think, was that the Church was no longer focused on "positional unity" -- one's position before God, through salvation. They had become legalists, particularists, traditionalists. That is still why many schisms happen today. OBSERVATION: And an emphasis on positional unity is a great power for good.
