Protea Survival

I took the photos this morning, of proteas after a veld fire. On the left, a singed protea, and on the right (the same species), a burnt protea. Both have expelled their seeds, leaving only the receptacle and dead bracts surrounding it. OBSERVATION: So there is a moment when the entire species is dead in a given area, with only seeds on the ground. It seems, too, that the proteas control the fire, or the seeds could easily be burnt on the ground.
