Set Up For Conflict
What to do with conflicts of identity and culture? We have a problem, in our new plural society. We live with a dichotomy. We have embraced pluralism, which according to Calvin Schrag (philosopher), is ‘diversity rather than homogeneity, multiplicity rather than unity, difference rather than sameness’. At the same time, we have adopted absolute rights, which in the words of Carl Wellman (philosopher) ‘always hold, i.e. disadvantage some second party, within their scope’. This plurality, writes Ronald Fletcher (sociologist), makes 'the problem of preserving order and freedom very great'. OBSERVATION: Which means that, on our current views, we set ourselves up for interminable wrangling and conflict.
