Suicide Among Elites

I looked over a paper this morning, published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, on suicidal thoughts or ideation among elite athletes: "World Athletics and National Olympic Committees need to include suicide prevention in their athlete protection programmes." The reasons for suicidal thoughts -- and suicide -- have been passionately debated. Judging from my own experience in counselling, I consider that a major contributor could be this: that people put an intense effort into something that only makes sense within itself. The day they wake up and ask, "What for?" they are in trouble, because there often is no answer. OBSERVATION: On the one hand, one daren't think such thoughts, yet on the other, it is vital to have a larger sense of what it is all about.
