Tenebrae Flames

Many Churches hold a Tenebrae service on Maundy Thursday -- a service of readings and prayers, where candles are extinguished one by one. For years, under my ministry, our Church verger (Eric Heath) dimmed the lights as each candle was extinguished. It was a very big dimmer. He was busy one year when there were sparks and smoke, then flames rose from the dimmer. To the congregation's surprise (they couldn't see Eric or the dimmer), I leapt off the altar and made for a mains switch, and the flames went out. OBSERVATION: The dimmer was replaced with switches. Everybody missed the dimmer.
