† Dorothea Scarborough

Sadly, my mother passed away this morning, at 86. In her last weeks, she went into rapid decline. Her first memory was of Hitler’s troops invading Poland. She stood at the gate all day, she said, to watch them pass. She became an assistant translator to the United Nations, ministered sacrificially in remote islands in the Pacific, then headed various organisations and publications in Africa (she famously took me off her mailing list). Even in high old age, she was vastly connected, with great and small.
