Well, this is a sad oscilloscope trace. What it shows is my hand approaching a metal plate. As my hand gets closer, so the trace rises higher. Each square segment represents 3 volts' fluctuation over 100 milliseconds, at the output. The supply voltage is 12 volts, or four 3 volt segments. Now notice a problem. The trace rises above 7 volts, or about 60% of 12 volts -- but alas, a logic gate requires 66% to switch.
OBSERVATION: I tentatively overcame this problem, then blew out the circuit -- by unthinkingly wearing a jersey -- and a jersey = static.
